Varsity Transit and Varsity Charter Company Histories The companies of Varsity have been providing safe, reliable transportation services in New York City and surrounding counties for more than three decades. Over these past 34 years, Varsity has remained on the leading edge of transportation technology and customer service. Varsity Transit was first formed in 1965 to bid on school bus routes in New York City offered by the New York City Board of Education. The competitive bidding process resulted in Varsity Transit being awarded 800 school bus runs, beginning in September of 1965. The company procured the necessary buses and equipment, purchased and opened three garage facilities, and began its long-term service to the Board of Education on September 12, 1965. Varsity Transit's services included both regular transportation operations and some special education routes. Over the years, Varsity Transit's school bus operation has increased in size to include special education transportation, as well as the transportation of wheelchair students with special lift-equipped buses. Service also has increased for regular transportation over time as a result of new minimum distance requirements between home and school for grades K through 6. Varsity Charter Corporation, an affiliate of Varsity Transit, was formed in 1989 to provide pre-Kindergarten student transportation through the New York City Department of Transportation. Varsity Charter also serves as a charter company for school field trips and similar transportation services. |
